A research team at LSU's Pennington Biomedical Research Center has been approved for a five-year, $4.5 million funding award by the Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI) to evaluate two treatments for children who have obesity.

The researchers will look at which is more effective—counseling by a primary care provider focusing on healthy eating and activity habits, or a combination of provider counseling and family-based treatment delivered by a trained counselor for both children and parents.

While a hurricane affects everyone, cancer patients are especially vulnerable; treatment can weaken the immune system and increase the risk of infection or injury, and displacement means routines are disrupted. The best time to plan isn’t when a hurricane is looming – it’s when skies are clear.

The Professional Fire Fighters Association of Louisiana (PFFALA) recently donated $10,000 to the coming 50,000 square foot expansion of Baton Rouge General’s (BRG) verified Regional Burn Center. The expansion will include a burn intensive care unit (ICU) for trauma patients, specialized operating suites for critical burn patients, and state-of-the-art technology.

The Commission on Accreditation in Physical Therapy Education (CAPTE) has granted candidacy for accreditation to the new doctor of physical therapy (DPT) program at Franciscan Missionaries of Our Lady University (FranU). In the late spring of 2018, CAPTE, the sole accrediting body for physical therapy professional education programs, authorized FranU to admit qualified candidates into the program.
