According to the Louisiana Department of Health, Joe Kanter, MD, Louisiana public health officer, is resigning from the post.  

Kanter has served in the position since January 2021, having replaced Jimmy Guidry, MD. Guidry served the in office for 24 years. Pete Croughan, MD, deputy LDH secretary, has been named interim state health officer.

A highlights of Kanter’s leadership was his push toward vaccine drives among nursing home residents and staff, who were among the hardest hit with COVID fatalities and serious illnesses early in the pandemic.

Our Lady of the Lake Heart & Vascular Institute celebrated 10 years of serving the Baton Rouge community with a special event on Feb. 26. The event showcased Our Lady of the Lake’s commitment to providing the best cardiovascular care to the region and beyond.

Foundation for Woman’s Board of Trustees announced it has elected officers to serve for the 2024-2025 year. Celton Hayden, Jr., chief executive officer of CC’s Coffee House, will serve as the board chair. Hayden has served as a member of the Foundation’s board since 2015. 

“Celton is a visionary leader committed to increasing the capacity of Foundation for Woman’s to invest in the most vital community health needs of women,” says Foundation for Woman’s President Keila Stovall.

Franciscan Missionaries of Our Lady University’s Intensive Care Earth Club (ICE) hosted its third annual clean up at Sweet Olive Cemetery in recognition of Black History Month.

Officially dated to 1898, Sweet Olive was the first cemetery for African Americans incorporated in the Baton Rouge city limits.

ICE is an organization that focuses on restoring the Earth and cleaning up the community. In February of 2021, the club wanted to focus on something that would restore a part of Baton Rouge's history in honor of Black History month.

The Hogs for the Cause Family Support Home officially opened with a ribbon cutting ceremony at Our Lady of the Lake Children’s Hospital on Feb. 22. Known as the “Hogs House,” the family support home serves as free on-campus housing for families from outside of Greater Baton Rouge who have a child receiving ongoing care at the hospital.
