Our Lady of the Lake invites the public to the second annual Willie F. Hawkins Health Fair on Saturday, Nov. 9 from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. at the LSU Health Baton Rouge North Clinic located at 5439 Airline Hwy, Baton Rouge.
“We are proud to partner with other organizations to provide residents in North Baton Rouge additional access to healthcare screening and resources through this event,” said Coletta Barrett, vice president of Mission for Our Lady of the Lake. “Last year, more than 200 participated in the first Willie F. Hawkins Health Fair and this year, we look forward to serving even more.”
Adult screenings for colorectal cancer, blood pressure, glucose, and HIV will be offered at no cost, along with adult flu shots. Those in attendance can also participate in free educational seminars about hypertension, chronic kidney disease, diabetes, tobacco abuse, asthma/COPD, and opioid abuse.
The community health fair is named in honor of Willie F. Hawkins, who played an instrumental role in helping to secure the land where the LSU Health Baton Rouge North Clinic now stands. Among his many accomplishments, Hawkins provided leadership in public healthcare through his various state administrative positions, including 16 years with the LSU system. His distinguished career included roles with the Louisiana Health Care Authority as well as several healthcare and non-profit organizations.
This free event is open to the public and will have more than 30 healthcare and community education exhibits available providing information. Attendees can also be entered into a chance to win door prizes.
The community health fair is presented by Our Lady of the Lake and LSU Health Baton Rouge and will be hosted by Senator Regina Barrow, Senator Yvonne Colomb, Representative Barbara Carpenter, Representative C. Denise Marcelle and Representative Pat Smith. Sponsors of the event include Aetna, Healthy Blue, Louisiana Healthcare Connections, UnitedHealthcare, and AmeriHealth Caritas Louisiana.
