Nursing Home Group, Team Mergist Complete World Record Challenge for Longest Bingo Game

BINGO! That’s what the residents and employees of six Elder Outreach communities, volunteers, and sponsors shouted for 24 consecutive hours as they worked to earn a record for the world’s longest Bingo game at Southwind Healthcare and Rehabilitation in Crowley, La.

While official confirmation from the Guinness Book of World Records® is still pending, Elder Outreach and Team Mergist, one of the top Alzheimer fundraising groups in Louisiana, confirmed that their application to the organization was accepted earlier in June.

“We always strive to do the unexpected and extraordinary because that’s what our residents are,” said Michele Veillon, marketing and design director for Elder Outreach. “This effort reflects their tremendous spirit among our communities, our strong partnership with the Alzheimer’s Association, and a cause that is near and dear to the hearts of many participants and organizers.”

The attempt to set a Bingo world record was held in conjunction with the Alzheimer’s Association’s signature event “The Longest Day,” which honors the strength, passion, and endurance of those living with Alzheimer’s and their caregivers. Elder Outreach residents and other participants spent the longest day of the year setting a world record while simultaneously raising awareness for Alzheimer’s and the search for a cure.

“My mother was diagnosed with dementia five years ago and is in the final stages of this debilitating disease, and I also have two aunts and a grandmother affected as well,” said Christine Payton of Team Mergist, one of the top Alzheimer fundraising organizations in the state. “I’ll move mountains and, yes, set world records, until the first survivor is found.”

While many individuals rotated in out of gameplay throughout the event, a core group of six individuals made up of friends and family of Team Mergist played for 24 consecutive hours in an attempt to set the world record.

“That group committed themselves and never wavered in their mission,” said Veillon. “They were completely dedicated and professional, and pushed through until the end!”

A lineup of celebrity callers that included Sen. Jonathan Perry and Acadia Parish Assessor Jim Petijean kept the action lively, while themed hours of play maintained a high energy level and strong momentum. Non-cash prizes valued at $10 or less were awarded to many of the winners.

The event raised more than $13,000 in proceeds from ticket sales, sponsorships, and individual donations. Those funds will be donated directly to the Alzheimer’s Association.

Confirmation of the record for the world’s longest Bingo game is expected within 12 weeks.
