Tulane University biomedical engineers are developing a new device to rapidly detect life-threatening blood-clotting problems in trauma patients using just a single drop of blood.

It’s a potentially life-saving advancement for cases of severe injury, where every minute counts as emergency teams work to stop bleeding and assess a patient’s coagulopathy, a condition that can cause excessive bleeding or blood clots due to defects in the body’s clotting process.

Our Lady of the Lake Cancer Institute welcomed Harry Sequeira, MD, to the Heme-Malignancy and Cell Therapy Program. He is a board-certified internal medicine physician and specializes in cellular therapy, leukemia, and myelodysplastic disorders. 

Our Lady of the Lake Cancer Institute has also recently become a site for a Phase I clinical trial with Poseida for allogeneic CAR-T therapy, making the Institute the first in state.

Our Lady of the Lake Health hosted a blessing and ribbon cutting on Sept. 9 to celebrate the installation of Abbott’s GLP systems Track, a clinical lab automation system featuring smart CAR (self-propelled carrier) technology. 

Our Lady of the Lake is the first hospital in Baton Rouge to implement this system, which eliminates more than 80% of manual steps, accelerates and standardizes turnaround times, and enhances reliability, delivering faster, safer lab results for patients across the region.
