The DAISY Foundation was established in 2000 by family
members of J. Patrick Barnes who died at the age of 33 from
complications of Idiopathic Thrombocytopenic Purpura
(ITP), a little known but not uncommon auto-immune dis-
ease. During Patrick’s 8-week hospitalization, his family was
awestruck by the compassionate care provided by his nurs-
es. In honor of Patrick, the DAISY Foundation was created
to recognize extraordinary nurses everywhere who make an
enormous difference in the lives of so many people by the
super-human work they do every day.
